In the Quran, God says: “And the heavens
God constructed with strength and indeed God is its expander” (Quran 51:47). This ayah explains how God created the
universe by forming it and increasing it in size. In the Muslim’s perspective, God
said “Be” (Kun in Arabic) and the universe was there. According to the standard
theory, our universe sprang into existence out of nowhere. Yet, as Muslims,
understand that it came from God who is known as “the first” (Al-Awwaal) as
revealed in the verse “He is the First (nothing is before Him) and the Last
(nothing is after Him) and the Most Near (nothing is Nearer than Him) and He is
the Knower of Everything” (Quran 57:3). This ayah clearly states that nothing
came before God and thus, the Big Bang did not come before Him as well.
Yet this ayah presents
clear evidence of God’s existence which is not understood by the scientific
community. As a result, many scientists say that the universe occurred
spontaneously and they are uncertain about how the first atom appeared. As a
result, most scientists chose to believe the theory of the big bang. Yet if God
created the atom or matter, than the big bang theory would not be considered to
be a singular event. There were steps that occurred before the universe came to
be. One Islamic Scholar, Yusuf Estes, emphasizes that the Big Bang theory
“tries to explain the existence of the universe in an evolutionary manner having an initial beginning with an immense explosion of some gases or solid mass. Some say there first was a void or ‘nothingness’, or perhaps, some gases which exploded then from this everything in the universe simply began to evolve to the stage that we see now. There has never really been any solid evidence for this idea of 'something out of nothing' concept. Nor for that matter, the evolutionary theory itself.”
This quote clarifies the theory of the Big Bang by suggesting that the universe appeared from an explosion of gases, yet where did the gases come from? Several scientists proposed the theory that the universe started by Inflation, Post-Inflation and the formation of Galaxies.
